Diuresis

Volume of urine produced and excreted by the kidneys.

Definition

Production and excretion of urine by the kidneys, quantified by the volume of liquid excreted per unit time.

How it works

Diuresis is an important parameter of fluid balance in the body. Normal diuresis in adults is approximately 1-2 liters per day, but varies with fluid intake and urine concentration needs. An increase in diuresis (polyuria) may result from increased fluid intake, low ADH levels, or pathologies such as diabetes. Decreased diuresis (oliguria) indicates fluid retention or renal insufficiency. Diuresis is regulated by ADH and aldosterone, two hormones controlling renal reabsorption.

Role

Regulates water and urinary waste elimination according to homeostatic needs.

Examples

  • Normal diuresis: 1-2 L/day
  • Polyuria: > 2.5 L/day
  • Oliguria: < 400 ml/day
  • Increase after water consumption

Recommendations

Monitor diuresis as an indicator of hydration status. Significant reduction or abnormal increase may signal a pathology requiring investigation.

Key takeaway

Diuresis reflects the balance between fluid intake and renal hormonal regulation.
