Apo-A1

Major protein of HDL, associated with cardiovascular protection.

Definition

Apo-protein A1 is the main structural protein of HDL (high-density lipoproteins). Marker of protective cholesterol and cardiovascular function.

How it works

Apo-protein A1 is the main protein present in HDL, known as 'good cholesterol.' It plays an active role in removing cholesterol from arteries and transporting it to the liver for excretion (process called reverse cholesterol transport). A high Apo-A1 level is associated with better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of atherosclerosis. Apo-A1 is often a better marker of protection than HDL-C alone.

Role

Promotes inverse transport of cholesterol and reduction of cardiovascular risk.

Examples

  • Elevated Apo-A1 levels in healthy centenarians
  • Increase with regular exercise
  • Improvement with consumption of fruits and vegetables

Recommendations

Target an Apo-A1 level above 140 mg/dL in men and 160 mg/dL in women. Engage in regular physical activity and consume unsaturated fatty acids to increase Apo-A1.

Key takeaway

Apo-A1 reflects the protective potential of HDL and is an excellent marker of cardiovascular health.
