Iodine

Essential trace element for the thyroid and fetal brain development.

Definition

Iodine is an essential trace element for the synthesis of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) that regulate energy metabolism, growth, and brain development.

How it works

Iodine deficiency is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation worldwide. It causes goiter (thyroid hypertrophy) and hypothyroidism. In France, iodized salt has significantly reduced deficiency. Needs increase during pregnancy as the fetus depends on maternal iodine.

Role

Synthesis of thyroid hormones, regulation of basal metabolism, fetal brain development.

Examples

  • Sea fish (100-200µg/100g)
  • Seafood
  • Seaweed
  • Iodized salt
  • Milk (40µg/100ml)

Recommendations

ANC: 150µg/day for adults, 200µg during pregnancy. Prefer iodized salt for seasoning.

Key takeaway

Iodine deficiency during pregnancy is the number 1 preventable cause of mental retardation worldwide.
