Definition

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin produced by the skin under UVB action. It regulates phosphocalcic metabolism, bone mineralization and modulates the immune system.

How it works

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is synthesized in the skin or provided by food. Activated by the liver then kidneys, it regulates intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Deficiency (very common) is associated with osteoporosis, depression, infections and certain cancers.
