Dietary Fiber

Indigestible carbohydrates that feed the gut and regulate blood sugar.

Definition

Dietary fibers are indigestible complex carbohydrates in plants. Not absorbed by the small intestine, they play a key role in intestinal and metabolic health.

How it works

Soluble fiber (pectins, beta-glucans, inulin) forms a gel slowing sugar and cholesterol absorption. Insoluble fiber (cellulose, lignin) increases stool volume and accelerates transit. Both types feed the microbiome.

Role

Regulate blood sugar and cholesterol, feed the microbiome, prevent constipation and colorectal cancer.

Examples

  • Soluble: oats, apple, legumes
  • Insoluble: wheat bran, green vegetables

Recommendations

25-30g/day recommended. Increase gradually with good hydration.

Key takeaway

Fiber is the most neglected nutrient, yet it protects against many chronic diseases.
